Maxwell Chapman Critical Thinking

Beyond the Bio: Steidel Fine Art

Beyond the Bio is a series that takes you past the canvas and into the minds of the artists and curators who build the contemporary arts community.

London & Texas gallery Steidel Fine Artwill be featured at Art City Austin: Art Alliance Austin’s 3-day art fair from March 31st – April 2nd at the Palmer Events Center.

Gallery Name: Steidel Fine Art

Location: London & Wimberly, Texas

What prompted the start of Steidel Fine Art?

While immersed in the London art scene over three years ago, founder and company director, Maxwell Chapman, observed an underserved standing of contemporary American art in the British metropolis and sought to rectify that. After establishing a base in the affluent Chelsea Fulham District of London, Mr. Chapman set his sights on creating a presence in the booming global art fair circuit.

Steidel Fine Art made waves in the Affordable Art Fair venues in the UK and from there, looked to mirror that success by bringing contemporary British and European art to the US art market. Steidel Fine Art opened its first US gallery space in the Texas Hill Country in 2016.

Since then, Steidel Fine Art has exhibited international art collections at Art Basel week in Miami, and will be heading to New York City in April 2017. The gallery continues to hold seasonal, event driven exhibitions at the Texas showroom, where it seeks to build on the rapidly growing, art savvy audience of nearby Austin.

What services and products do you offer?

Steidel Fine Art is a contemporary art gallery and comprehensive art consultancy. By upholding an active fair schedule, we seek to maintain an international presence and provide our clients with exclusive collections and unprecedented commissioning opportunities. We offer a complimentary curatorial service to help our clients select the perfect piece for their interior and/or acquire a great addition to their personal collection. We also work alongside corporate and hotel partners for large scale projects.

What guides you in selecting artist to represent? What qualities do you look for?

Steidel Fine Art strives to present an eclectic portfolio of distinctive works that originate from across the globe today. The artists we represent are chosen for their quality of ideas and conceptual originality, as well as their deep understanding of their materials across a wide range of media.

What new artists are you excited about today?

A new artist that we have just acquired a collection of recently is Debra Van Tuinen. We are excited to be showcasing Van Tuinen’s landscape art at the upcoming Art City Austin because she uses an encaustic medium of wax layered pigments to evoke a translucent emotion that emanates bright light and pearlescent movement. She creates a consciousness of the earth by embracing Japanese ‘sembyo’ style brushstrokes that exemplify a meditative carelessness and spiritual freedom.

What advice would you give someone who is thinking about buying their first piece of serious original art?

We would recommend that before buying that first landmark piece to get out and attend a couple art fairs, visit your local galleries and get a better understanding of what kind of work is available and develop a taste for the kind of artwork that you really connect with. A personal art collection is something you are going to view on a daily basis so you want to have a comfortable infatuation with that particular piece; in other words, you should love it.

The expansion of online art platforms like Saatchi and Artfinder are great, but without seeing the art in the flesh, there is an element that is missing, a real connection. That connection is an important aspect in acquiring the first piece of a collection you love and are proud of.

Steidel Fine Art is a international, contemporary art gallery with showrooms open by appointment only, located in the Chelsea Fulham District of London and the Texas Hill Country in Wimberley, just outside of Austin.
